making mundanity magical.
How much life can be found in one silk scarf? Can you tell an entire story about uneven tension in a knitted textile? What about a pile of rice? Lisa Virginia is a Deviser, Director, and Producer who believes that the minutia of our lives are spectacular in and of themselves and deserve to be treated as such. With each piece that Lisa creates, they pull meaning to the forefront by finding the magic within the mundane.
Lisa is especially interested in telling stories about immigrant and racial minorities. They are Filipino-American and were born and raised in Flushing, Queens where they still reside. Flushing is a vibrant community full of people from all walks of life. There, Lisa learned the importance of eating at the hole-in-the-wall Pho spot down the street and traversing deep into mini-malls to find crochet flower shops filled to the brim with handmade art. They generate their joy and inspiration from the people around them—the people they rub shoulders with during rush hour and roll eyes with when the bus is delayed. These are the people who Lisa wants to tell stories with and about.
Lisa weaves teams into communities by leading with transparency and flexibility. Curiosity is fundamental to their process. By asking questions that complicate, Lisa layers complexity into their art. With care, they tread the line between empathy and irreverence, unapologetic in their exploration of topics we instinctively turn away from. Lisa’s work is characterized by an immediacy that intertwines intellectual rigor with ethereal fluidity. In this manner, Lisa hopes that they can foster spaces and experiences that are imbued with the power to heal little kernels of our souls.
